Comment
Add a CommentOf course we expect excellence from the Marine Band, and this CD does not disappoint. Two personal favorite composers, Gustafv Holst and Percy Grainger, have seldomly heard pieces on the album and they are exellently interpreted by Col. Coburn and the band. holst's "Suite from the Perfect Fool" contains Dances to the Spirits of Fire, Water and Earth, each with its accompanying change of mood and texture. Having performed this arrangement in the past i can tell you that the Marine Band is masterful in the difficult passages and incredibly expressive throughout. Likewise in the Grainger. Particularly effective is the slow Pastorale and the delightful Gumsuckers march. Finally, the acoustical ambience of the Schlesinger Hall enhances the musicianship of the ensemble, and the post production by the recording crew are to be commended for the overall sound of the album.
