Although Adolf Hitler held the ultimate responsibility for what became the Holocaust, it was Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS, who essentially laid the plans and devised the schemes that led to the killings of six million Jews. An important and engrossing book that makes evident why Heinrich Himmler should be regarded as the master planner of the Final Solution.

A good, short history of Holocaust-planner motivation and early exterminations. Ends with Wannsee Conference. Much more digestible than exhaustive treatments. Interesting, generally convincing inferences re hidden thinking of Hitler, Himmler, Heydrich, Frank, Rosenberg, others. (Caveat: Page 128 says Frederick Barbarossa led the First Crusade, an amazing error. Page 241 indicates that 600,000 French Jews were deported to Auschwitz, a wildly excessive figure. What other less obvious blunders are made?)
