I really love this series. On the other hand, this is the third book in the fourth trilogy in this universe… if you’re not already a fan, don’t start with this book!

This story starts with a tense political situation and most of the action happening behind the scenes, but once things reach a boiling point there's plenty of the kind of excitement that's much more fun to read about than to experience first hand. Bullets are flying, escape routes are uncertain. These books are set in a culture where widespread armed conflict is rare and there is strict respect for the safety of non-combatants. Betrayer gives us insight into both the Guild members who honour these conventions and the renegades who ignore them. Main character Bren Cameron seems to be under the curse, "May you live in interesting times," but it does make for interesting reading.

No second-guessing at this point. They were in the mess, things were in motion, and there was no way back from here, no way that he and his bodyguard could arrange. They had to survive . . .

He thought of a lot of things, none that were practical, and most of which were rash in the extreme, and he knew, sensibly speaking, that a stray, pale human in run-down boots and a pale dress coat wandering through the lines of fire was just not going to end well.

It was a good thing to be wanted.
Even in mutually incompatible directions.
