The sheep that Ava counted every night at bedtime were exhausted. Why? It was because Ava took such a long, long time to fall asleep.
This was because her mind was always too busy to slow down. It was full of ideas, questions, thoughts of today and plans for tomorrow. Thus the poor sheep had to jump over the fence many times each night.
Finally, they had enough. “We quit!” the sheep declared.
They promised to find replacements.
Easier said than done!
The jumping chickens made Ava laugh so much that she couldn’t possibly think of counting or sleeping. The pigs were much more interested in eating than jumping. And the cows? Well, they proved to be a complete disaster.
The hippos insisted on waddling around the fence rather than jumping it.
The penguins took one look at the condition of the fence and called an excavator to remove it. Before that happened, however, the buffalo, flamingos, armadillos and beavers – unable to decide who would jump first – stampeded the fence and flattened it, scattering splinters and chunks of wood everywhere.
How would Ava fall asleep now?
In the end, the sheep are able to find a clever solution that is a perfect ending to this hilarious, playful story.
With colourful illustrations which depict the foolish facial expressions of the nighttime animals perfectly, Can’t Sleep Without Sheep will undoubtedly hit a bedtime funny bone night after night.
