One has to be quite open minded and patient to appreciate this film: its quite long and boring. A weird woman, who becomes psychotic, and then returns to just being weird again - all with an awful industrial droning sound for most of the film.

I understand to some extent the idea behind the film - that a person can feel disconnected in their life, and the challenge is to come to terms with that alienation. There's a lot of people who talk around the subject, and one of them has figured out how to exist, but can't seem to get our main character to reconnect with life. There's quite a striking use of colour and form in the film, and a performance that almost captures the essence of how one can lose touch with the world, but I have a feeling that the message could've been conveyed less elliptically and more concisely.

a film from the time of growing industrialization in Italy. Antonioni thought forests were boring and the industrial landscape was much more interesting. here we see it in its full polluting glory. industrial workers become chess pieces to move around - even to another continent. Monica Vitti plays an industrialist's wife who is alienated from herself and her family in that harsh landscape. interesting for its historical perspective.

Solid 1960s Italian film about a stylish mother and her young son seen walking through disgusting, constant industrialized areas with toxic pollutant emissions instead of nice parks--powerfully done, some surprises.
