Edmund C. Tarbell was the leading painter in late-19th-century Boston and the leader of the avant-garde in Boston and New York. His works are masterpieces of design, colour and light. Together with Frank W. Benson, he ran the School of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts for many years influencing generations of Boston artists and patrons.
