Having read the Song of the Lioness quartet last year, this series is very reminiscent of Pierce's first story. I wouldn't have wanted to read it right after SoL because of the similarity, but because I've had a break, I really enjoy getting back into the world of Tortall. So good for building female confidence! I would definitely recommend this to young girls.

I REALLY liked this book!! It had me laughing many a time!
Also I found it quite funny that the more the 'bullies' beat her up, the more combat practice she got! They were helping her with out releasing it!!

Great book about a doubted girl trying to prove herself in the medival world ruled by men. An excellent, dynamic book.

I liked Keladry's series a little less than Alanna's, but I found this one more interesting. While Alanna disguises herself as a boy to become the first Lady Knight, Kel is a girl through and through and struggles through the challenges a sexist world throws at her to reach her dream.

This and the Terrier series are my favorite Tamora Pierce. I recommend to read this series first as it incorporates all the pain and dedication needed for the first girl, who everyone knows as a girl, to go through the hazing and torment of learning to become a knight.
