RULE BRITANNIA is the best novel. I didn't really like REBECCA. FRENCHMEN;S CREEK is my favorite-sublime romance.

Re-reading this book again after so many years, I'm again struck by how successfully Du Maurier managed to get a reader to suspend disbelief and carry on reading a story that depends entirely upon far-fetched scenarios and highly improbable coincidences. Not her best work but very much in the genre, full of atmosphere, mystery and a sense of place. A message to the twenty-somethings of our day: This is what gothic was like fifty years ago when the gore was off-stage and sex was heard but seldom seen. Otherwise, the characters are the same, their motivation as murky as ever.
