Cute premise of maple syrup to leverage high tech goodies, technology transfer, used mining ship & ancient factory ship to modernize against the Horvath. Asteroid fortress borrowed from golden age science fiction.

The writing is great, reminds me of Halo.

Ringo (alone) just keeps ruining otherwise POTENTIALLY decent sci-fi by promoting his Far Right wing (of course just those aspects of the Far Right that suits him.... read the Paladin Series ("Kildar Series") starting with "Ghost" to see how he really is and how The Conservative Movement" would disown him in a heartbeat - at least I surely hope that they would!!! And if you don't believe that Kildar's acts of perversion (and racism and constant painting of all "Islamics" being Bad Guys and "black-asses" - as in Mideast types, you know, like the Semitic Jew Yeshua, or Jesus!) and snide comments about "fundamentalist Christians" and "those rich bastards" (in references about how they caused such and such specific problem).

Cannot believe how much better - with NONE of Ringo's agenda crap - "his" books are when teamed up with another (but GOOD) author such as Drake or Weber!!!

Very creative take on the "alien invaders" idea. Tyler (not Troy as the description above says) Vernon basically uses free market economics to save the world. And it makes sense. The technical detail in some parts can be a bit slow, but it all comes together with a purpose. It is not detail just for the sake of detail. Well worth the read. The characters are well crafted and the humor is spot on.
I'm picky about sci-fi, this is highly recommended.

Great sci-fi with a fantastic blend of humor and technical details that keeps this fast paced plot grounded in some reality. Highly recommend this ambitious first book in the trilogy to any fan of the genre.
