An ancient sin. A long forgotten oath. A town with a deadly secret. Something sinister is at work in Hyde River, an isolated mining town in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Something evil. Under the cover of darkness, a predator strikes without warning--taking life in the most chilling and savage fashion. The community of Hyde River watches in terror as residents suddenly vanish. Yet the more locals are pressed for information, the more they close ranks, sworn to secrecy by their forefathers' hidden sins. Only when Hyde River's secrets are exposed is the true extent of the danger fully revealed. What the town discovers is something far more deadly than anything they'd imagined. Something that doesn't just stalk its victims, but has the power to turn hearts black with decay as it slowly fills their souls with darkness.

This is now the 4th or 5th Peretti book that I have read this year and expect the first one "This Present Darkness" they have all been slow starts. It seems that they start slow and end with a lot of loose ends being tied up. I do like how he symbolizes sin almost like a huge elephant in the room with no one wanting to talk about it idea no matter how big the "elephant or in his book "dragon" gets. Except for the slow start it did end like the rest in great fashion. I'm now off to read the next one on my list "Visitation".

Absolutely amazing. This quote from the book sums it up perfectly: "He was looking that beast right in the eyes, and for the first time, he was not afraid". A few people will love this book, but many more will hate it or be bored by it. If you get the story, you should be one who loves it. If you don't...keep trying to figure it out.

I think you have to be into this kind of genre to truly enjoy this book. I found it okay but the plot failed to grab me and I finished the book just because I had already read half of it and didn't want to waste the effort I had already put into it

Loved this book!! Frank Peretti really knows how to scare his readers and keep them reading. There is so much action and scary moments in this story. Even though it is a long book, it really doesn't feel like it because it's sooo interesting!

i guess i can see why poeple have't written on this book, it's not very well known, and does tend to ramble a little and never really get anywhere, but i really liked this book. it was creepy, eery, and you didn't know who would die next. i hated it that levi and tacy died, but itwas still a really good book, even if it did take me two days to read, which is sort of unnatural. two WHOLE days!!! that's a really long book.

"If This Be Sin, Let Sin Be Served," they had said. Not such a great idea after all.

He was looking that beast right in the eyes, and for the first time, he was not afraid.
