In the oil-rich and environmentally devastated Nigerian Delta, the wife of a British oil executive has been kidnapped. Two journalists--a young upstart, Rufus, and a once-great, now disillusioned veteran, Zaq--are sent to find her. In a story rich with atmosphere and taut with suspense, Oil on Water explores the conflict between idealism and cynical disillusionment in a journey full of danger and unintended consequences. As Rufus and Zaq navigate polluted rivers flanked by exploded and dormant oil wells, in search of "the white woman," they must contend with the brutality of both government soldiers and militants. Assailed by irresolvable versions of the "truth" about the woman's disappearance, dependent on the kindness of strangers of unknowable loyalties, their journalistic objectivity will prove unsustainable, but other values might yet salvage their human dignity.

This novel tells the story of two journalists who set off in search of a kidnapped British woman, wife of an oil executive. The book shows the devastation of the oil industry on the environment and people of the Niger Delta. Why does no one care or is willing to make some lifestyle changes?

The telling of this tale evokes the greatness of THINGS FALL APART. Its directness. The way it bases its style of story telling not on television dramas, but on the cadences of story tellers of the past. Its achievement, though, is how successfully it presents the predicament of the African people when faced with the onset of global plunderers: the warring factions that only are clothed in their rationales for their misery making. I took its lesson (though it’s as far from pedantic as possible) to be that It’s not about good vs. bad, but about how to rescue the innocent victims and provide them some opportunity to live.
