Great characters who are based on their outlooks free even in prison and other characters who are imprisoned even in freedom. Joy to watch at least once every year.

If there is such a thing as a template (or blue print) for the perfect movie then Shawshank Redemption fits the requirements. As seems to be more often the case than otherwise, Stephen King's non-horror stories translate well on screen (add Delores Claibourne and Stand by Me). Who can forget "Brooks was here," "Get busy living, or get busy dying," and the twice used term "obtuse." A classic!!!

Get busy living or get busy dying. This film is definitely in my top 10 favorites of all time because of the complexity of the characters, innocence versus guilt, and how to survive anything.

Really great movie. One of the best movies based on a Stephen King book. In a way this movie reminds me of the other Stephen King book/movie The Green Mile. But, some of the language in the movie (The Shawshank Redemption) is not for anyone under the age of 16.

Coarse Language: "Fuck" is used throughout along will "mother" and its variations. "Shit, bitch, bastard, damn, cock, dick, prick" and much, much more is used. A character says "suck my dick with no teeth" another used "Fuc*" sexually.

Violence: Beatings. Beatings were many die. Some abuse. Ok, a lot of abuse. A character is shot four times (blood sprays). A man hangs himself (emotional scene). A man shoots himself in the head (blood and matter splatter the wall behind him) Emotional content throughout and homosexual rape.

Sexual Content: a character is homosexually raped several times (never shows, just strongly implied) Curse words are used sexually. sexual references. Some pin up posters shown. Cheating on spouses and a brief sex scene in the beginning (nothing shown)

7Liberty7 Sep 20, 2014

Coarse Language: Loads, I mean, loads of vulgar and foul language. But then, it's a film with prison inmates...what would you expect?

vitriolic7eyes May 01, 2012

Frightening or Intense Scenes: These scenes are riddled throughout the movie so they are not isolated to simply one section. Be warned.

Violence: mild but intense

Andy Dufresne: [to Red] I guess it comes down a simple choice: Get busy living, or get busy dying.

Andy Dufresne: What about you? What are you in here for?
Red: Murder, same as you.
Andy Dufresne: Innocent?
Red: [shakes his head] Only guilty man in Shawshank.

Red: [narrating] The first night's the toughest, no doubt about it. They march you in naked as the day you were born, skin burning and half blind from that delousing shit they throw on you, and when they put you in that cell... and those bars slam home... that's when you know it's for real. A whole life blown away in the blink of an eye. Nothing left but all the time in the world to think about it.

Red: [narrating] I wish I could tell you that Andy fought the good fight, and the Sisters let him be. I wish I could tell you that - but prison is no fairy-tale world. He never said who did it, but we all knew. Things went on like that for awhile - prison life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, Andy would show up with fresh bruises. The Sisters kept at him - sometimes he was able to fight 'em off, sometimes not. And that's how it went for Andy - that was his routine. I do believe those first two years were the worst for him, and I also believe that if things had gone on that way, this place would have got the best of him.

This dramatic endearing movie will appeal to a wide audience.

The tale of a man wrongly accused and imprisoned this movie follows the path of a man seeking his redemption.

While his struggles to find a place in Shawshank prison, and his efforts to escape are clever and engrossing, it is friendship that is at the heart of this story.

Highly recommended.
