This is the tale of Gay's life from his beginnings to his struggle with writing and how he writes. He has taken bits and pieces from things he was going to write about in a book and put a lot of them into this book as individual chapters. It is an interesting look at New York/New Jersey during the mid 1900s but nothing spectacular.
