Libba Bray definitely earned her Printz award for this. Cameron is a high school student dealing with the normal high school horrors. He's got a crush on a popular girl way out of his league. His sister is dating a jerk on the football team. The boss at his after school job is a pain. His Dad is distant, commandeering, and probably having an affair with his secretary. Then he is diagnosed with mad cow disease. It is a fatal disease that will wreak havoc with his body and destroy his brain before it kills him. Whats more, this is a laugh-out-loud funny, delightful, fantastical, story.
In the midst of his illness, Cameron is visited at his hospital bed by a pink-haired, combat-booted angel who eats his pudding. She tells him that he has a quest. He must go on a journey to find Dr. X, a scientist who has unwittingly opened a dark portal in the fabric of space and time which will destroy the world. Dr. X will also be able to cure his disease.
Cameron escapes the hospital and embarks on a wild road trip with Gonzo, a midget hypochondriac from his high school who is sharing his hospital room. They travel to New Orleans to find a legendary jazz player. They get stranded at bus stations. They get picked up hitching by a happiness cult. They liberate a yard gnome who turns out to be the Norse god Baldar. They appear on reality TV. Along the way they are chased by dangerous fire demons, a Darth Vader-like emperor of Reckoning, and vigilante agents from a snow-globe company.
Going Bovine is unique, funny, wonderful and profound.
