The 13 year old twins Aaron and Alex Stowe live in a place where creativity is shunned; the Quill. There is no singing, dancing, drawing, no mentioning of dreams, and dark, dull colors. And then there is the purge. The up-coming group of 13 year olds are divided into three groups. The wanteds, people that will thrive in the high ranks of the Quill, the necessaries, the people who are used for the dirtier jobs, and the unwanteds, the people who have been reported for showing some sign of creativity. And where do the twins end up? The complete opposite of each other, Aaron Stowe is placed in the wanteds, and Alex Stowe, in the unwanteds. One twin right where he is supposed to be in the Quill's eyes, and the other, sentenced to death. But Alex is in for the biggest surprise of his life. What if instead of the Great Lake Of Boiling Oil there is a wonderful creative place where the unwanteds talents are put to use? Sounds completely farfetched right? The Quill would obviously not accept that, but is exactly what is happening. The death farmer that is supposed to be the last thing you see is actually a wonderful, loving man named Mr. Today, who created a place where creativity is key called Artìme. In Artìme you learn to use the talent that got you purged from the Quill to create magic. Alex falls in love with the place and creates strong bonds with three wonderful named Megan, Samheed, and Lani. But he still feels a longing for his twin knowing that he should be there with him. And when he is held back from magical warrior training be grows distant from his friends and becomes obsessed with his brother, but telling him of Artìme will expose it to the quill, bringing on a war. Will Alex tell Aaron? Will a war be caused because of his behaviours? Find that out, and much more when you read the book.

In Quill, being creative can get you killed. Meghan loved to sing. Lani made up stories. Samheed was eloquent and wanted to join the Quillitary (i.e. Quill's military). And Alex drew figures in the mud with his twin brother, Aaron; however, only Alex was reported for this artistic infraction. Out of all these children, Aaron was the only one who was
not chosen to be eliminated. Indeed, as the plot reveals, Aaron was the informant who caused his neighbors--Meghan, Lani, and Samheed--and his brother to be declared Unwanted and, as a consequence, condemned to death. Once the doomed children arrive at the Death Farm outside Quill, however, they are rescued and encouraged to develop their creativity in a settlement called Artimé.

In Artimé, artistic talents grow into magical abilities. And these supernatural skills will be needed to defend the refugees' sanctuary when its existence is discovered by the citizens of Quill.

Mr. Today and Justine, the respective leaders of Artimé and Quill, have very dissimilar leadership styles. While Mr. Today invites critical thinking and independent decision making, Justine quickly punishes those who deviate from the path laid out for them by the government.

Ultimately, these leaders' differing ideologies cause their followers to battle with each other. The violent acts described in the novel are inventive but not gruesome. Instead, the focus of the book remains on the reasons why its characters act as they do. This dystopian fantasy is a thoughtful exploration of the nature of war.
