This set of DVD's is more like a long movie as the story continues from disc to disc. On my player, each DVD had sections that stalled for a minute or so. I was attracted to this BBC DVD because of the female role actress - Amanda Burton - who I had enjoyed watching in "Silent Witness". She is excellent in her role showing a range of expressions. The main story line kept me guessing, while the secondary plot of a police coverup provided motivations for several of the actions of the main characters. The main police characters are not shown in a positive light. This DVD set kept me at the edge of my seat after a slow start.
Like others have said, this is wildly implausible, a woman in her position acting so recklessly, foolishly, just does not hold water. I guarantee you'll say "hang on" sometime within the first half hour at least. Also, for someone like La Plante who puts women in front as her leading characters, I must say I am disappointed that, as per even Prime Suspect, she shows no respect for female bodies. Women are almost always her chosen victims, and all too often shown nude when dead. It's offensive to the female actors who end up doing this, and to the female audience who might like to see women's bodies treated with proper respect. Even in the first few seconds here, there are close-ups of Amanda Burton taking off and putting on her shirt. I sat there thinking "really?"
If you are interested, there is a really different role for Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) here.
Good series to watch.Dramatization of Dealing with power, corruption and fight of a woman in the police dept.man's world.
A waste of Amanda Burton talent . A bit too drawn out, not as tight as Prime Suspect. Estate conditions well portrayed.
Ugh! How could La Plante, the same mind who gave us Prime Suspect, come up with such a silly story. The lead is laughable and you feel sorry because the story is so bad. Skip this, watch Prime Suspect, watch Silent Witness... heck, watch paint dry it too will be far more entertainingly.
Disappointed. Nothing close to Silent Witness. La Plante has turned this to a soap opera. Is our Commander really that lonely? So many men around and she has to go to bed with the not-100%-cleared ex-convict? And then sleeps with the not-so-loyal assistant's boyfriend. Why should a senior police officer bring in the bags of cocoine to her own office and put them in her drawer while she knew she was in hot water already? I've never served in the police force, yet I know the best way to get rid of those things is by flushing in the toilet, because I saw them done in the movies. As a commander, should have known that while she was still working as a constable during a drug raid. Maybe Ms Plante never watched crime movies except those written by herself.
good series the next season is now ready for purchase!
Most implausible story line in first episode. The female commander has a "love relationship" with a convict who murdered his girlfriend. Huh?
But the ending was great! Really great acting - strong characters/plot. The lead is meant to be a bit of a shadowy character (as in unethical, amoral - simply ambitious) - you don't exactly "like" her but she is interesting. Her colleagues are equally unscrupulous. Interesting bunch! David Patrick O'Hara is fantastic as the BlackDog.
