Marc Royce stares down from the helicopter at the Rift Valley slashing across Africa like a scar. Tribal feuds, drought, and dislocation have left devastation. Now Marc sees a new wound - a once-dormant volcano oozing molten lava across the dry landscape as clouds of ash obscure his vision. His undercover assignment is obscured also. Supposedly dispatched to audit a relief organization's accounts, Marc finds himself amid the squalor and chaos of Kenyan refugee camps caught in a stranglehold of corruption and ruthlessness. His true task, however, relates to the area's reserves of once-obscure metals that are now indispensable to high-tech industry. The value of this rare earth inflames tensions on the world's stage and among warring tribes. As Marc prepares to report back to Washington, he seizes a chance to restore justice to this troubled land. But this time, he may have gone too far …?

Barf. I read it for research. Am interested in the topic of rare earth mining in the developing world; was curious to see how the subject might be fictionalized.
I dislike fiction in which the author is very obviously infatuated with his main character. Enter the protagonist: a Christian white male saviour of unfortunate (but good-hearted) African tribesmen, etc. etc. Need I say more? Barf...says it all.

Davis Bunn has done it again - jumping in from the first page with action and intrigue. You won't want to put it down!

Really good book. Action and philosophy. Hard to put down.
