An interesting story, but I figured out the "mystery" by page 73. Still a bit intriguing and I think it would be a good read to the end but the focus on deep magic and the ability to transfer the souls of the dead to animals....had to stop reading just as a personal conviction. :)

While I usually try to avoid children’s books (entirely too much drama and preteen angst for my taste), this one is an absolute charmer. It had a very “secret garden” vibe to it. I actually cried a little at the end. Just a little, seeing as how I was at work and I didn’t want anyone to catch me sniffling into my spaghetti.

This book is beautifully written, with an engaging plot; however, as the story unfolded more and more occultic elements came to light in the story. I enjoyed it, but would hesitate to recommend it.

“But the cockatoo stood patiently until the sash was lifted, looked at Clara with his golden eyes, and pleaded in such a rich, melancholy voice that she was bound to him with all her sympathies:
“Please? Please? Oh please?””
