Interesting twist, but not for kids in the slightest. Reader should be at least familiar with Old West sayings in order to smoothly follow the writing. Could do without the foul language and raunchy scenes.
This such a fun interpretation of the story of Snow White! Gun-toting! Magic! Kick-butt heroine! I don't read a lot of westerns, but this had me hooked from the first page. Valente's writing is stellar and completely packs a punch in this tiny little book!
I'm kind of torn on this book. I really liked it up until the last chapter or so, but the ending seemed kind of out of left field. Sort of the book equivalent of falling for someone saying "Hey, look over there!" and when you turn back around, the person who told you to look has run away, and you're left standing there saying, "Wait, what??"
A beautiful and dreamily written novel, this story is part fairy tale, part western and a captivating read about a woman encountering a cold, cruel, brutal world she must make her place in.
I enjoyed this. Short little read, ending has a twist that kind of doesn't go where you expect it to. Overall, I would recommend.
Retelling of the Snow White story with western poetic language. The writing is lovely.
Intense. Bizarre. So very different.
A stunning, magical little book, a postmodernist Wild West fairy tale, composed of poetry, dreams, dust, blood, gems, fox fur, and deer hearts. If I didn't know any better, I'd think Catherynne Valente was writing stories just for me.
