Herbie Pilato is an expert on Bewitched. He's written plenty of material, including The Bewitched Book, but sadly, his biography of its star, Elizabeth Montgomery, is a disappointment. For one thing, it's full of typos and badly constructed sentences. For another, it's repetitive and dull. How many times do we need to be told that Montgomery played both Samantha and Serena? We're reminded at least five times in different chapters. We learn precious little about the experience of her career post-Bewitched, too. She divorced William Asher, her third husband and father of two of her children, and made many appearances in TV movies, playing serious roles such as Lizzie Borden.

There's little mention of working with Kirk Douglas in Amos, which was one of Montgomery's best later roles. There's very little mention of her work onstage either. When she did Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, with her fourth husband, Robert Foxworth, what role did she play? She would have been a superb Maggie, but when they did the play, she would have been better cast as Big Mama.

Such a vibrant and talented woman has been given a lifeless, dull biography!
