Lise Dupree, Librarian for the Omaha Public Library in 1879, is drawn into the Standing Bear trial when she learns her Aunt Rose is being held at Fort Omaha. As she helps with research for the trial, she finds herself drawn to Zach Spencer, the prosecuting attorney and Senate candidate. When Lise's part-Sioux heritage is discovered in backroom political machinations, she is torn between Zach and her job. Although Lise and Zach are fictional characters, Nowak fleshes out the book with real historical figures -- Standing Bear, Suzette La Flesche (Bright Eyes), General Crook, Andrew Poppleton, and others. The author is also true to the places in 1879 as she describes in her author's notes. I found it fascinating to compare the Omaha of 1879 with the Omaha of 2016 as many characters and places survive as street and business names today . This novel is a genre blend of romance, historical fiction, and western.
