It's 1939. Russia teeters on the verge of war with Germany. It is also on the brink of bankruptcy. To preserve his regime, Stalin orders a search for the legendary missing gold of Tsar Nicholas II. For this task, he chooses Pekkala, the former investigator for the Tsar. To accomplish his mission, Pekkala will go undercover, returning to Siberia and the nightmare of his own past, where he was once a prisoner in the notorious Gulag known as Borodok and where he must infiltrate a gang of convicts still loyal to the Tsar.

This is the same book as "Siberian Red", it just has a different title.

A well written "who done it". Eastland at his best. Steeped in, researched, Russian history.

I really liked this book!! After reading Eastland's first Inspector Pekkala book, The Eye of the Red Tsar, I was wondering if the author could keep the interest and suspense up to the same levels. in a work, yes.
This is an engaging and atmospheric read set in a fascinating and alien time and place. The characters had depth and rose above being caricatures. Great series.
