everything you wanted to know about Lina Prokofiev, including the colour and cut even of her dresses, and a great deal about her husband, Serge, too, but the horrors of Stalinist Russia, implicit in the daily life of its citizens, soon take precedence, and are harrowing, it's hard to believe an entire population could have been so ruthlessly and mercilessly brutalized, an utterly repellent and shameful history perpetrated by, surely, megalomaniacal monsters, right next door at the time to, however of course, Hitler
