It was just another ordinary day at McKinley High--until a massive explosion devastated the school. When loner David Thorpe tried to help his English teacher to safety, the teacher convulsed and died right in front of him. And that was just the beginning. A year later, McKinley has descended into chaos. All the students are infected with a virus that makes them deadly to adults. The school is under military quarantine. The teachers are gone. Violent gangs have formed based on high school social cliques. Without a gang, you're as good as dead. And David has no gang. It's just him and his little brother, Will, against the whole school.

Amazing novel, its plot is exciting and it's all visually appealing. The love triangle causes drama! Each chapter is from a different character's point of view, so if you like that check this book out!

I LOVED this book! i dont like books with too much romance, and this one had the perfect amount. so the romance isnt the only thing going on, but enough to make me feel like a "normal" teen girl. its got a great plot, and its not a dystopian novel which so many are these days, which i dont find too interesting. its one of those books that you start reading at 9, thinking youll only read a few chapters, then suddenly its like 1 am and youre more than halfway through the book.

The Loners tries really hard to be as good as the Hunger Games or Divergent or even Lord of the Flies. It just isn't. There are definitely good parts and I read it through to the end but felt let down by the time I finished. The author lost control and some things didn't add up; couldn't quite buy into the climax. Still, I think some readers would enjoy the plot and characters.

The inside cover likened it to Lord of the Flies, and it definitely lived up to expectations. In the beginning, everybody wasn't together, but they weren't enemies. But as they got closer to the end, they formed their own groups just like in LotF. I enjoyed the book immensely and can't wait to read the second one.

Easy to read, fast-paced and a page-turner. I read it in one weekend. Lord of the Flies revamped!

Think high school on steroids. Alternately, high school plus prison minus adults. --- After the outbreak of a virus, the entire student body is encased in its school building. The teachers are all dead and the military drops food once a month. The teenagers are trapped, on their own, to create their own social order and decide how to share, distribute, trade, steal, or fight over the food and few other resources available. Needless to say, they do not create a utopia. --- I had trouble buying the premise that creates the scenario, and the set-up at the beginning felt sketchy and rushed. Once the book got past that and started developing the characters and their setting I was more hooked into the action, though. Not one to read for its sociological or psychological examination of the human creature (the comparisons that I saw to Lord of the Flies are stretching), but it's a fun adventure.

Interesting book, it was really good. It was kinda slow in some parts but, still a good book.

I had a friend suggest this to me. I read it within one night! I absolutely loved it.

A really gritty and terrifying scenario. Inside jacket hails it as a modern-day Lord of the Flies and the similarities are definitely there, but with talk of an impending zombie apocalypse, this is the 2000s version with viruses, cell phones and high school gangs whose members are all fighting to survive and make it to "graduation" day

There is a lot of criticism towards this book. Personally, I really loved this book. There is violence, cussing, and a few sexual content, so if you're not interested in those, this book is not for you!
I will be looking forward to the next book! (Summer 2013)
