"Claire Petrenko always knew it was coming. Breast cancer has claimed the lives of both her mother and her younger sister. Now, as she cobbles the pieces of her own life back together, the devastating family legacy returns, and Claire receives the same diagnosis. So when her old friend Jenna Hogan suddenly shows up at her door -- like a fairy godmother offering to grant a wish -- Claire seizes the chance to revisit her past... and salvage her future. What begins as an impulsive trip soon becomes an odyssey as the women cross the country, gathering friends as they make their way to their childhood home of Pine Lake. There they discover that Jenna's random act of kindness has rippled out into the world like a stone dropped into a pond, surging back to transform all of them in ways they never expected."-- From back cover.

Stitches is a small, inspirational book packed full of HOPE, the idea of love, and acceptance of yourself. Lamott acknowledges the world is violent, messy and not fair. She poses questions about the meaning of life, like `What if you don`t ever get over tragic loss in your life?` The tone of the book is authentic and conversational, like you are sipping coffee with Anne and she`s telling you a story to illustrate a point, yet it challenges you to find meaning and happiness by discovering a need and filling that need in small ways with great love. Anne suggests we `Lean against each other, so none of us will blow away in the cold wind` and do accept ourselves and the help from others, but never give up.

I loved going on this journey with these friends. This is no shallow story; each of the characters has more to deal with than she realizes. In helping each other through rough times and dealing with past "failures," they all end up helping themselves, too.
A complicated story, as you must get to know each of these women who've known each other since their school days together. But then you'll be sorry to have to say goodbye to them as the book ends. Don't worry, there is a sequel (Senseless Acts of Beauty) that develops the story of some of the minor characters in this story (although I did not enjoy the sequel quite as much as I did Random Acts of Kindness).
