Munroe has retreated to Djibouti, where, while passing as a man, she finds work as an interpreter for a small, private, maritime security company. Pressed into duty at sea by her boss, Leo, Munroe discovers she is part of a gunrunning operation and she wants no part in protecting the crew or cargo. When the ship is attacked by pirates off the Somali coast, Munroe escapes and takes the unconscious captain with her to get answers.

An androgynous protagonist from an author with an androgynous name. A bad-ass kick-ass heroine in a wonderfully atmospheric novel that brings the dark continent to life by treating the inhabitants and way of life with respect without over-romanticizing. Taylor Stevens crafts a story that is anything but formulaic and provides an entertaining thrill ride so that I'm compelled to read her earlier stories.

Taylor is such a great writer. Plenty of authors depict their characters in different locales and climes but Taylor makes you feel it, hear it, smell it like you were walking through those dusty, loud African market places mingling with food and animal and unbathed humans yourself. And that's not even the story! The rest is pure cream.

"Once more making use of her skill with languages, Vanessa "Michael" Munroe is passing as a man, working for a Djibouti-based security company whose specialty is ships at sea. Complications ensue when the one she's been coerced into working on -- which just happens to be smuggling guns with her bosses' knowledge -- is attacked by Somali pirates. Escaping with the unconscious captain -- who apparently is the prize the pirates are after -- Michael lies low while she figures out what to do and how to help her crew. Chock-full of action without much introspection, this 4th in the series is a must-read for adrenaline junkies who appreciate a good, violent fight; for Michael's reasoning for hiding out in Africa, start at the beginning, with The Informationist."
