Billy Bob Thornton completely transforms himself for his role in this movie; he is unrecognizable. This is an absolutely haunting story about the lasting effects of poverty, child abuse, and neglect. The film explores the nature vs. nurture debate and resolves (or fails to resolve, you'll have to watch to find out) the issue in a realistic and satisfying way.

Very disappointed - no cc.

A total sack of rubbish. This piece of sentimental schlock could have been redeemed only if:

1. Dennis Hopper would have played the Dwight Yoakam character (abusive boyfriend.)

2. The soundtrack would have to be done by Killdozer with the theme song being Cotton Bolls - "When I was just my poppa's son, he would beat me on the head with the butt of a gun" and "Poppa got himself run down by a train, I shot him in the guts to end his pain"

3. The only useful scene - the beginning and end in the asylum could be tracked by the Kevin Coyne ballad "House on the Hill" - "I'm going to the house on the hill, the place where they give you pills..."

The conclusion to SLINGBLADE was not enough to redeem the long journey to get there. I had high expectations and I wasn't enthralled with Billy Bob's performance. I realize that he cultivated this character well, but that wasn't enough to overlook what I felt was a lacklustre script. It felt plotless and meandering and I never felt engaged with these characters. Perhaps someone else from a different culture with a range of experience unique to mine may have seen something in these characters; perhaps they followed a story that I never saw. But, for me, I can't in good conscience recommend SLING BLADE.

Brilliant movie with a legendary role by Billy Bob Thornton. No hype, no corny effects, no efforts to pack artsy bits. Everyone in the movie put in an amazing performance. I wonder why Billy Bob didn't go on to play more punchy roles like Karl since 90's. He certainly can act, as we saw in Koen Brothers' movie. A must see!

Didn't even know that Karl was Billy Bob Thornton till about 10 minutes into the movie. His acting was superb and showed me his range in skills. Interesting movie and a good twist at the end

Took a while to draw me in, but I am glad I stayed with it, especially the clever ending.

The actor did an excellent job portraying a man that had been locked up because of his crime, served his time then released into a world he knew nothing about and was extremely confused.
It was extremely sad to see the mom's boyfriend be so abusive towards Carl and belittle him like he did.
What I found endearing was the friendship he formed with the young boy and how determined he was to protect him and his mom.
In the end, I don't agree with what he did, but he cared more about their safety than the boyfriend.

Excellently done movie involving a bizarre, but surprisingly sympathetic character and a plot that makes a lot more sense than it has any business doing.

Karl: I don't reckon you have to go with women to be a good daddy to a boy. You been real square-dealin' with me. The Bible says two men ought not lay together. But I don't reckon the Good Lord would send anybody like you to Hades. That Frank, he lives inside of his own heart. That's an awful big place to live in. You take good care of that boy.

Karl: Coffee makes me nervous when I drink it. Mmm.

Frank: Ever think of killing yourself on purpose like my daddy done?
Karl: I studied about it. The Bible says you ought not to. It says if you do that, you go off to Hades. Some folks call it Hell, I call it Hades.
