"Will we ever get tired of watching Cher navigate Beverly Hills high school and discover true love in the movie Clueless? As if! Written by Amy Heckerling and starring Alicia Silverstone, Clueless is an enduring comedy classic that remains one of the most streamed movies on Netflix, Amazon, and iTunes even twenty years after its release. Inspired by Jane Austen's Emma, Clueless is an everlasting pop culture staple. In the first book of its kind, Jen Chaney has compiled an oral history of the making of this iconic film using recollections and insights collected from key cast and crew members involved in the making of this endlessly quotable, ahead-of-its-time production. Get a behind-the-scenes look at how Emma influenced Heckerling to write the script, how the stars were cast into each of their roles, what was involved in creating the costumes, sets, and soundtrack, and much more" -- provided by publisher.

Clueless is many things, every one of them good. But above all, it is a giddily happy movie. Not surprisingly the cast and crew remember themselves as happy throughout its making. At over 300 pages, As If! is the most complete chronicle of the film, from pitching the idea, through casting, filming, production, and specific areas like costuming, music, reception, and the lasting cultural impact of this extraordinarily successful achievement. If you've watched Clueless more than once -- I've long ago lost count -- consider this book obligatory reading.

Culled from extensive interviews with Amy Heckerling, the cast, and crew of Clueless, Chaney has constructed an oral history that while not quite as enjoyable as watching the film itself is still an interesting read. Exploring all phases of making and releasing the film as well as its legacy, the book includes some interesting behind-the-scenes tidbits. While not quite as sparkling and interesting as I was hoping for, if you're a die-hard Clueless fan, picking up this book won't be a waste of time.
