"Life is like a story. It doesn't mean anything if it doesn't end." One of my favorite lines from this book. Classic story telling with many life messages for young and adults. Magic always come with a price and why "don't be afraid". Liesl Shurtliff is an excellent writer and I especially enjoyed how she tied in characters from her first book, RUMP, into this, her third. I look forward to many more from her.
Blending elements of Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears into an adventure quest that touches on what dying means and looks like, this is a very readable little book. It sounds heavy, but worked really well and was quite sweet.
This is the first book that I have read from this author and I am so glad that I did! From the moment I finished the first chapter it pulled me in and took to right into the fairy tale. I loved meeting all of the characters and seeing how they changed throughout the tale. Many twists and turns created a fantastic journey with Red. I hated to see this story end. I was bothered by the thread of dying that ran through the book but in the end the authors notes explains it perfectly and it made complete sense.
So I read her previous book Rump which I thoroughly disliked because it was so depressing. I was not looking forward to "Red" at all.
However I went ahead, checked it out from the library, sat down to read a chapter or two. When I came up for air it was chapter 20 of 26.
I instantly became engrossed and invested in the story even with the irritating beginning of Goldie. Because who hasn't had that annoying cheerful friend that you just wanna hug their neck.
Completely reinventing the story of Red Riding Hood while still being faithful to the source material. (Although I do wish she had been brave enough to gender flip everyone and not just one character) Honestly I can't tell you too much about the story or else it will be spoiled. Basically Red goes on a quest to find a way to stop her grandmother from dying. (Read the author's note in the back for a complete cry fest.) I highly recommend you read this book and suggested to other young people.
