"Wild horses thrived for thousands of generations in the mountains, forests, and deserts of the American West. Their family herds existed in environmental harmony until man chose to "manage" them. Since then, every day more of America's wild horses disappear. But courageous people are trying very hard to reverse this, most notably, young people who feel a kinship with these often misunderstood creatures."-- Provided by publisher.

A beautiful depiction of the wild horses of the west and what has/is happening to them. The book is narrative nonfiction, easy to read and follow. It opens with a chapter on Velma Johnson, known as Wild Horse Annie, and her fight in the 1950's to protect the wild mustangs from capture, abuse and sale to stockyards. There are chapters on the prehistoric horse, the daily life of a wild mustang, why they are vanishing and how, and a final chapter on young people who are fighting to save these beautiful animals. There are gorgeous photographs throughout the book. The pages themselves are a quality, cream colored paper that adds to the beauty of the book. Scattered throughout are insets titled EYEWITNESS with a name of someone (frequently the author herself) that describes an event they have either seen or been involved with that relates to the chapter's subject matter. There is a very useful pictograph to demonstrate visually the length of time horses were absent from North America (geologic time is translated into a 24 hour clock.) The book has a glossary of terms at the back, as well as Chapter Notes and resources, a Bibliography and thorough Index. Highly recommended for young activists and horse lovers.
