Tight plotting, okay [though a bit cliche] characters, a capable piece of genre fiction

Somewhere in this mishmash of a book there may be a good story. The crucial point of the plot was predictable early on so no surprise there. This would have been better with fewer characters and fewer labored attempts to provide plot twists. It must have been laborious to write--it was certainly laborious to read.

Author Matthew FitzSimmons succeeds in breathing new life into the thriller genre with his debut novel THE SHORT DROP. With interesting characters and a heady mix of mystery, politics, technology, suspense, and action, this novel is a real page-turner. Various subplots, coverups, conspiracies, twists and turns kept me guessing as to who I could trust and who I couldn’t as this smoothly written story progressed. And once I discovered what the title referred to, it was very hard to forget.

This was great read for a first book. The story line was well defined and the characters were well developed. Agree with other comments and can't wait till his next book comes out. If you like David Baldacci you will certainly enjoy this book also.

Great read. You get a sympathetic MC, intricate mystery that links the past with the present & a fast paced plot. Well written narrative that flows & you'll keep reading because you have to know what happened to Suzanne. Really looking forward to the next book out later this year.

The Short Drop by Matthew FitzSimmons has to be one of the best debut thrillers I have read in a very long time. Great suspense, a rapid pace and bad people who will send chills up your spine. I found it very difficult to put this story down to go to work!
The book starts on the ten year anniversary of the disappearance of at the time Senator Lombard’s daughter. He has risen to Vice President and is now running for his party’s nomination for President. Growing up, Gibson Vaughn was the son the Senator’s chief advisor and best friend with his daughter, Suzanne, whom he called ‘Bear’. Gibson’s life at the time of Suzanne’s disappearance was a disaster and he still blames himself for not being there for her. When a picture of Suzanne’s backpack appears, it sets into motion all the moving pieces of this plot into several explosive revelations and dead bodies.
The characters in this story are all extremely well developed, good and bad. The ‘short drop’ scene is intense. The plot is tightly woven with several subplots that do not confuse the reader and are all answered by the end. I cannot recommend this book enough!
I want to thank Thomas & Mercer and Net Galley for allowing me to read for free the uncorrected proof of this debut novel in exchange for an honest review. I hope there are many more to come from this author!

Great first book by this new author. A political thriller/mystery with a good plot, good characters, and a good mix of action and suspense. Will definitely read the next book in this series. I would recommend this page turner to readers who like this genre.
