One of the last unheralded heroic stories of World War II: the U-boat assault off the American coast against the men of the U.S. Merchant Marine who were supplying the European war, and one communitys monumental contribution to that effort, that is Mathews County, Virginia. Nearly every family in this tiny community had a personal stake in the U-boat war, none had a greater than that of Captain Jesse and Henrietta Hodges and their seven sons. -- Amazon.com

A fascinating story, and one with broad appeal - both the Merchant Marine sailors who went to sea (and went repeatedly *into* the sea when their ships were torpedoed), and their families' experience at home. The people from this seafaring Virginia county experienced the complete range of WWII on all seas of the world, from Cape Hatteras to Murmansk to Malta to the a-bomb airbase on Tinian. Some of the details become repetitive, but a good yarn!
