From what I hear, Roddenberry was a better "big picture" and idea man than he was a hands-on writer and producer. A lot of people think that he was in charge of the whole Star Trek universe, when in actuality after the first movie, and after the first Next Generation season, Paramount took away the main control from him, and kept him around as an "executive consultant."
