I like steampunk, and the English dubbed version of this remarkable animated film kept my interest from start to finish. I recommend it!

I'm always on the lookout for new steampunk films, so I was pleased to run across this at the library. (The twin Eiffel towers on the front were a dead giveaway that this was an anachronistic/uchronistic setting.)

It's a bit different from "regular" steampunk in that it's not set in the late 1800's, but rather the 1940's - technological advancement was delayed due to some key discoveries not taking place until much later. It's also set in France, not London or the Weird West (which are the usual steampunk locales). The story is well-written and coherent, and the characters are interesting (if not always likeable). Even the talking cat is actually funny at times, instead of dumb (like most animal sidekicks, imo), and the grandfather "Pops" is a hoot.

My only real caution is that things get a bit gritty and destructive, which makes this film less suitable for young children DESPITE it being considered part of the "juvenile" DVD collection in the library. But for older viewers looking to sate their steampunk craving, this film does very nicely indeed.

Not recommended for young children, best for ages 12 and up. Very dark and a depressing setting and story and rather flippant about strangers' deaths.

Tintin meets Jules Verne. In the French original, the cast include Marion Cotillard, Marc-André Grondin (C.R.AZ.Y.), Jean Rocheford, et.al. Great fun to watch.

Combining gorgeous art and fascinating characters, this is a unique and funny film. April is charming, her cat is sassy, and the adventure is super satisfying. Grab this if you want something surprising and deeply entertaining.
