As a private banker working for the largest bank in the world, UBS, Bradley Birkenfeld was an expert in Switzerland's shell-game of offshore companies and secret numbered accounts. He wined and dined ultrawealthy clients whose millions of dollars were hidden away from business partners, spouses, and tax authorities. As his client list grew, Birkenfeld lived a life of money, fast cars, and beautiful women, but when he discovered that UBS was planning to betray him, he blew the whistle to the US Government.

The Department of Justice scorned Birkenfeld's unprecedented whistle-blowing and attempted to silence him with a conspiracy charge. Yet Birkenfeld would not be intimidated. He took his secrets to the US Senate, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Internal Revenue Service, where he prevailed.

His bombshell revelations helped the US Treasury recover over $15 billion (and counting) in back taxes, fines, and penalties from American tax cheats. But Birkenfeld was shocked to discover that at the same time he was cooperating with the US Government, the Department of Justice was still doggedly pursuing him. He was arrested and served thirty months in federal prison. When he emerged, the Internal Revenue Service gave him a whistle-blower award for $104 million, the largest such reward in history.

A page-turning real-life thriller, Lucifer's Banker is a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the secret Swiss high-net worth banking industry and a harrowing account of our government's justice system. Readers will follow Birkenfeld and share his outrage with the incompetence and possible corruption at the Department of Justice, and they will cheer him on as he "hammers" one of the most well-known and powerful banks in the world.

This is an interesting book, written by a relatively unsophisticated [and you'll see as you go through it] and rather shallow fellow, the typical profile of the Private Banker.
Towards the beginning of the book, Birkenfeld mentions the chairman of State Street, Marshall N. Carter, and that he was the son of a deputy director of the CIA [and would later be director of the NSA, which the author doesn't mention], Gen. Marshall Carter, during the time of the assassination of President Kennedy. Interesting to observe that the son of someone in a pivotal position ends up chairman of one of the Big Four investment firms on the planet [Vanguard Group, BlackRock, State Street and Fidelity], which are the majority shareholders in the majority of major corporations in North America and Europe? Just as it is interesting to note that a former director of the CIA, Richard Helms, was the grandson of the first president of the central bank of central banks, the BIS, or Bank for International Settlements, in Basel, Switzerland [Gates McGarrah]. I really believe Birkenfeld's aggressive action against State Street was the real reason they jailed him, not because of his tipping off [neither criminal private banker, Birkenfeld, nor that female at Citigroup who also received a phenomenal // whistleblower \\ payoff, were actually whistleblowers, but simply disgruntled employee tipsters] the DoJ - - and surreal that they tipped off the DoJ, the g-law firm staffed by the bankers' shysters, just as the Treasury is staffed by the bankers' minions!
[Actual whistleblowers, who were screwed over time and again, are Cate Jenkins at the EPA -- thanks Obama - - and Carmen Segarra at the Fed, John Kiriakou at the CIA, Thomas Drake at the NSA, et cetera, and although not a whistleblower, but certainly a purveyor of Real News, Julian Assange! And no Joey Biden, Assange is not an international terrorist and Murbark WAS a dictator!!]
