If you have a stubborn belly you've tried unsuccessfully to shed, most likely sugar's to blame. Hidden sugar is everywhere and frustratingly difficult to dodge. For example, an order of boneless chicken wings with BBQ sauce from one popular restaurant contains the sugar equivalent of four donuts. A family-size portion of onion rings from a well-known fast-food joint packs 51 grams of sugar-that's 13 teaspoons! Even pain-relieving pills are coated with high fructose corn syrup! So don't disown your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe. That's not your nemesis. It's the hidden sugars we eat that have made losing weight harder than ever. But you can have your brownie and lose your belly too. You can drop pounds, dramatically improve your health, and still enjoy your favorite sweets. With The Sugar Swap Diet, #1 New York Times bestselling author David Zinczenko shares an easy-to-follow, scientifically proven plan based on super swaps of all your favorite foods, plus one simple nutrition rule- Make sure the carbs you eat have as much fiber as they do sugar. This fiber-to-sugar ratio helps to magically conquer your addiction to the sweet stuff and prevent the blood sugar surge that leads to abdominal fat and increased risk of a plethora of modern health issues. Did you know that sugar can force your body to store fat around your belly? cause your skin to sag? lead to depression? raise your blood pressure? significantly boost your chances of developing heart disease and type 2 diabetes? The Sugar Swap Diet swipes that all away and gives you the tools you need to take control of your diet-and your body. On this groundbreaking plan, you'll be armed with a comprehensive grocery list of fresh produce, proteins, whole grains, and even prepared meals; two weeks's worth of fiber-rich breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack recipes; and real-life results from successful sugar swappers. The fat-burning formula for long-term weight loss and optimal health is at your fingertips. Best of all, you'll feel stronger, happier, and more in control of your body than ever before!

So, I've given this a pretty high rating based on what I feel it has done for me. Cracked my 70's not that long ago and put in quite a bit of exercise time daily. I'm going to guess I do twice as much as many do, even many younger. My BMI is pretty much dead center normal. This fellow is throwing around two words which qualify as motivators, 'flat stomach'. To fuel that dream, we are pounded over the head with repeated material delineating the evils of added sugar and how nearly inescapable it is in our diets. I'm a believer. Readers of this book might want to reflect on how they've come to accept as normal the super sweetening of everything edible. So part one is 'no added sugar'. Part two is 'get enough fiber'. Your own common sense might be able to take it from there; he points out the good foods and the the ones to avoid. That includes eating at home, recipes, and tips on what you can eat at ubiquitous fast food and sit down eateries. Going all purpose, he throws in some ideas of helpful practices and even exercise. He is very scientifical; he cites a study where dieters off to a fast start do better in the long run, hence his 14 day starter. If they changed the condition of the study by telling all participants that working the principals would improve their life and both fast and slow measures would work, study results might have been different. There might be better books on the subject, and there is not much poetry in here, but I think I will be benefiting, if not, it will be my own fault.

My review: Not for those with gluten or dairy allergies as many of his food suggestions have lots of gluten and dairy. BUT it is low sugar and low carb so book is great for diabetics!

I have read over 45 comments on Amazon from readers who did not find the book useful. Many complained that the content was repetitive and could have been summed up in two or three pages. There were also over 200 "rave" reviews but I am left to wonder if the latter are really legit.
