Social prestige is derived from a trifecta of blood, money, and magic. However, one girl has the ability to break the spell that holds the social order in place. Sent from England to her family's once powerful but now oppressed native Hungary, Anna Arden finds herself in the company of nobles, revolutionaries, and the fierce and handsome Romani Gábor. She must choose to either deny her unique power and cling to the life she's always wanted, or embrace her gift, spark a rebellion, and change the world forever.-- Adapted from book jacket.

Newly released and a first book for this author, I have some mixed feelings. I get that it's her first, and I would cut her some slack, but it also wasn't my piece of cake. For anyone who likes politics and reading about a little girl that runs headfirst into decisions without thinking, this might be yours. The protagonist doesn't ever think things through, listen, and actually help in any way, shape or form. The romance was a little too choppy, and the whole introduction was nothing like what followed. It seemed like a twisted version of Red Queen, with less magic involved and more filler material.

I was expecting something related from "The Selection" with roses, blood, and faerie magic combined, but in the end it was part one of a world history fanfic trilogy of Hungarian independence. The writing was okay, the plot was nice, the characters were too many to deal with (unless it has its own Wikia), and I don't understand Hungarian language itself except perhaps I looked it up in the back once. Another new thing is I discovered a poet named Petofi Sandor because I would've read anything by him one day. If you enjoy complex fantasy with Victorian bits, I suppose you will give it a try.
