I do agree with another reviewer that this movie is boring except for one big scene toward the end of the movie.

It helps to have read the novel. This movie isn't great but it does take a shot at addressing the impact of our interconnected lives in general and social media in particular. A few years ago, I started to think of social media as "Little Brother." Today, as we follow news about Facebook, net neutrality, cyber crime, election manipulation, and related topics, it is apparent that Little Brother is growing up!

The idea and the plot are terrifying when you give it some thought. The movie, however, was more than a bit dull and rather saccharine. Read the book it was based on instead.

Emma Watson and Karen Gillan eased viewers into a world where a social media company engaged its employees and the public to share their lives practically 24/7 for social civility and transparency --- that people won't behave badly on camera --- with the objectives of high "participation rank" metrics (as "Likes" and "Followers".) As the fictional company was made to be near Golden Gate Bridge, the company could well be a out of control Facebook which in actuality has more than 2 billion monthly active users as of June 2017. A worthwhile cautionary tale on unchecked expansion of "features," "Apps" and "tools" that could lead to a future of "1984" and "Minority Report." The soundtrack was very good and relevant to the films message.

I loved the book so I was looking forward to seeing the movie. It felt like it was true to the book, and I can understand how if you didn't read the book it might have been a tough one to watch. My recommendation, read the book first and give the movie a shot.

I agree that the message of the movie is relevant, realistic and frightening. Tom Hanks played the part very well. However, the overall plot was disappointing. Some times the plot dragged and other times it leaped forward without allowing the viewer to connect the points. I appreciate the theme but felt the overall movie was disappointing.

While Hanks played the part well something was lacking liked energy, actions and felt character could have been stronger. Not the best movie but not worse either!!

Having read the novel first, this movie was a real disappointment. It over-simplified the message, and changed the novel's dark ending to a wishy-washy, more or less happy ending that took the edge off the entire story.
Skip this, and just read the novel.

Only 3 mundane quotes in IMDb now. Here are a few more:
We're not gonna become Amish, Mom. I... When someone dies in a plane crash, you don't abandon planes, you make them safer.

Secrets are what make crimes possible. We behave worse when we're not accountable. I was my worst self because I didn't think anyone was watching.

The Party Rank:
This is what participation is all about, bringing you, lifting you up. Thus, your participation window. I can't believe you've been here this long without being on the main social feed. You're about to have your world rocked. ... Oh, forgot one more thing. This is your participation rank. Party rank for short. Some people here call it the popularity rank, but it's not really that.
It's just an algorithm-generated number that takes into account all your activity in the inner circle.

Theme song Private Eyes performed by Lenachka lyrics:
Watching you
Watching you
I see you, you see me
Watch you blowin' the lines
When you're making a scene
Oh, girl, you've got to know
What my head overlooks
The senses will show to my heart
When it's watching for lies
You can't escape my
Private Eyes
They're watching you
They see your every move
Private Eyes
They're watching you
They're watching your every move
They're watching you
They're watching you
They're watching you
They're watching you
They're watching you
They're watching you
They're watching you
I see you, you see me
I see you, you see me
Private Eyes
They're watching you
They see your every move
Private Eyes
They're watching you
They're watching your every move
They're watching, you
They're watching you
They're watching you
Watching you
Watching you
They're watching
Watching you
Watching you
They're watching, you

Lyrics to ending song Simple Gifts - Jónsi:

'Tis the gift to be simple
'Tis the gift to be free
'Tis the gift to come down
Where we ought to be
And when we find ourselves
In the place just right
To bow and to bend
We shan't be
Ashamed
To turn, turn
Will be our delight
To bow and to bend
We shan't be
Ashamed
To turn, turn
Will be our delight
To bow and to bend
We shan't be
Ashamed
To turn, turn
Will be our delight
To bow and to bend
We shan't be
Ashamed
To turn, turn
Will be our delight
'Tis the gift to be simple
'Tis the gift to be free
'Tis the gift to come down
Where we ought to be
And when we find ourselves
In the place just right

Social peer Pressure:

I just haven't had time yet for extracurricular stuff.
-Wow. That's so interesting you put it that way. We actually see your profile
and the activity on it as integral to your participation here. This is how your coworkers, even the ones on the other side of campus, know who you are.
Communication certainly isn't extracurricular, right?
===
It's all connected. But you've had a blip or two when it comes to meshing with the community, like your absence at several weekend or evening events. Which are, of course, optional.
- I'm sorry?
Let's start with this weekend. You left campus at 11:42 p.m. on Friday and got back 8:46 a.m., Monday.
-Was there work on the weekend?
Oh, no, no! I didn't... I'm sorry. Oh, so sweet. There wasn't mandatory work
on the weekend. This isn't like a clock in, clock out type place, thank God!
But, you know, there were thousands of people here participating in a hundred different activities. ...
