Very slow moving film, without a point to the story. Ejected the DVD after about 30 minutes.
This was a slow burn and as expected Sam Elliott was being Sam Elliott. He was playing an ageing actor and voice actor with the golden voice, so seemed somewhat biographical. There was a one scene that showed an emotional range than I had ever seen him do before, as he was dealing with his cancer diagnosis, dealing with finding work and reaching out to his estranged daughter. Sounds like it would be a more interesting plot, but perhaps i was too tired (as i fell asleep before the ending), but did not make me want to review it, as I had seen most of the 97 minute film.
I did also find that the script was weak and uneven and somewhat unreal.
The main actors did a good job. The direction was not to my speed, but it was fine for the kind of movie it was. That said, the script was dreadful, which is why I give it only 1.5 stars. [SPOILER ALERT] A few examples of how bad this script was: man meets a woman and they sleep together on their first date, the next time they hang out together, he tells her, "I have cancer and I'm bleeping dying." The very next scene? They are having a post coital conversation in bed - because when a man you gone on one date with tells you he's dying of cancer, the natural thing to do next is have sex. Another example: In this movie (that is literally about a man coming to terms with the end of his life) when he tells his ex-wife, the mother of his children that he is sick, the natural thing to do is take a far away shot of them and not let us hear any of this significant conversation. Just a weak, weak script. I'd love to see this cast tackle a script that had some significance.
Sam Elliot was good but the script was unengaging, slow and pointless.
A fine Sam Elliott performance in a rare leading role (hence the generous 3-star rating) wasted on a lousy script. He plays Lee Hayden, a western-film actor on the far side of his career and his life, looking back with regret. Director Brett Haley's screenplay offers too many clichés and unbelievable plot elements -- not the least of which is Hayden's romance with a stand-up comedian (!) young enough to be his daughter. Elliott deserves so much better.
It is not like me to post comments on movies, but this one deserves an exception. I watched the trailer for Hero and placed a hold as it looked interesting. I already had a few films checked out with several others on hold, not to mention reading two library books that have to be returned soon. So I don't have time for poor quality movies. This is why, when I saw there were several comments here, I read them to see what people thought of this film before I made the decision to watch it or not.
I was disappointed to find all but one person who commented found it to be crap. It was especially disconcerting to see they were all very critical of his acting. This is why I am commenting. Fortunately I did not skip over this, but did decide to at least give it a chance, and was captivated from the beginning, and I hope others will be too.
I feel sorry for shallow people who are so numbed with all the mindless junk Hollywood feeds us that they cannot appreciate it when a rare movie, with excellent acting, comes along. I do have a minor objection to one plot device in the movie that I won't reveal, but other than that this is a very thoughtful and nuanced and artistic presentation with outstanding performances, especially by Sam Elliott, and the cinematography is a pleasure to watch as well.
Title should be changed from HERO to LOSER. i am a Sam Elliott fan but this one of his worst.
Mustash way over done. Wonder how the women liked kissing a broom? Was that his real hair? He had quite the mop? What kind of cancer did he have? Now that i am writing this review days later I can't recall most of the story line???? Maybe I fell asleep.
Sam Sam Sam..why on earth did you pick this sleeper? are you short on money? did you just like the fact that it was like the 60's man?? weed, women,wine?...I get that it might be something you could relate to, the whole life achievement thing and past glory, but you have done some really good work and for my money have always been a "sure thing" when it comes to spending my time on a film that at LEAST you are in it.....hope you find another script that lets you redeem yourself
Sam Elliot is not a very good actor and his performance in this movie proved it. He is a mustache with a deep voice that advertisers like to have represent their products. He thinks acting is tilting your head and looking at someone. After watching 3/4 of the movie we finely turned it off asking each other what was this movie all about? and neither had an answer. Don't waste any time watching this poor excuse for a movie. I will add this movie to my 5 worst movies watched.
I love Sam Elliott. I did not like this move. It was a slice of life film. No start, no ending, lots of pointless noise in the middle. Did not care for any of the characters, all unlikable. Its one of those films, that after you watch, you say to yourself " Well, there's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back."
