I found the book engaging, visual, and emotional. I have read over 40 of Zane Grey's novels and keep coming back for more. If you enjoy escaping into the west, and championing a hero, his novels are sure to please.

You will also gain a history lesson, as these are set well within his first or second person experience.

"The Dude Ranger', 1930, was by no means Zane Grey's fist western but it sure is full of soap opera like drama. I stayed with the story but frankly it was difficult to keep reading about romance for 240 pages. Maybe I was expecting a western and not prepared for Oprah romance. But I will give Zane more chances to read his westerns. He didn't get a world reputation for nothing.

I think the book title is mis-named and should be The Dude Rancher, not the Dude Ranger. There was no ranger in the book.

Read this book to find out what Zane Grey's writing was like. He really pushes romance big time. Story was very routine, as might have been expected from a writer who produced over 100 stories in the early 1900's. I won't be bothering with any others. A contrasting writer that I enjoyed more is Louis L'Amour, who provides more information such as survival techniques, than Grey.
