An offshoot of a Japanese television series of the same name, "Three outlaw samurai" is a classic in its own right. A wandering, seen-it-all ronin becomes entangled in the dangerous business of two other samurai hired to execute a band of peasants who have kidnapped the daughter of a corrupt magistrate. With remarkable storytelling economy and thrilling action scenes, it's an expertly mounted tale of revenge and loyalty.

This is one of the more realistic samurai movies where the "good" guys band together through various personal reasons and not just because one side is good and the other is bad. Also, the sides are somewhat balanced in skill as opposed to the tired idea of an unmatched super-samurai that wades into an army and comes out unscathed. Just like in life, multiple betrayals occur from friend and foe; and mercy and justice are not distibuted equally.

Definitely a worthy film to add to anyone's chanbara collection. Fans of Yojimbo, and Samurai Rebellion should enjoy this.
