A wonderful little gem of a movie, exploring the life of vibrant, controversial author George Sand and her crush on the fragile musical prodigy Frederic Chopin, brilliantly played by Judy Davis and a very young, not yet overly-blinking aw-shucks Hugh Grant. The action picks up speed at a retreat being held at the home of a bored and unhappy Duchess, featuring a hilarious performance by Emma Thompson, who invites a selection of the smug and jaded notable artistes of the day in a desperate attempt to bring culture to her dull and isolated life. Disaster inevitably ensues, but not before George Sand becomes smitten with the magical music she overhears being performed by Chopin, and enchanted with the man himself. In her bold quest to get to know the bashful young composer, Sand incurs the jealous wrath of her frenemy the Countess Marie d'Agoult, who is trapped in a once-vibrant relationship with Franz Liszt that has now gone south. Marie does her best to thwart their blooming love in an attempt to snag the pretty Chopin for herself. Filled with all kinds of fun "Easter eggs" for the art and music appreciator, and filmed in a wide variety of beautiful Baroque settings. A treat for the fan of costume dramas done well.

Pathetically boring and boringly pathetic. The rich and famous having nothing to say and behaving worse than their children did.
Also the disc is very damaged.

The acting was super good. There were only a few scenes I thought were completely unnecessary. It had good humor and I like the relationship between the characters.

I ended up watching it a few times over a period of time of course. I found it funny, light...not really truthful of their love life but still light hearted. The actors were great. You could envision all these artist sitting around the dining room table discussing the latest events in their life...so that part I enjoyed....all in go od humor.

One of my all time favorites. Humor both ridiculous & cerebral. Beautiful scenery, cinematography, and fabulous costuming. Touching love story.

Hugh Grant plays a bumbling Polish musical genius, instead of a bumbling English twit.
