When the seemingly dead body of a child reanimates hours after arriving at an ancient inn on the Thames, three families try to claim her.
On a dark midwinter's night in an ancient inn on the river Thames, a wounded stranger carries in the lifeless body of a small child. Hours later the girl stirs, and returns to life. Is it a miracle? Magic? As the days pass the child remains mute and unable to answer questions. Three families are keen to claim her: the wealthy mother of a kidnapped daughter missing for two years; a farming family sure it is their son's secret daughter; a parson's housekeeper, reminded of her younger sister. Each family has secrets, must be revealed before the girl's identity can be known. -- adapted from jacket

Open this book and immerse yourself in a tale while you wind your way down the river. You spend time leisurely floating and at other time find yourself fighting to stay afloat. The river becomes a part of you as does the story of the girl who was pulled from the river and brought to life at the winter solstice. Many want to claim her, but she seems to belong to all and to none at the same time. Her story is an enigma. Visit the Swan and sit down for a pint and you will hear this story and many more. Savor with your favorite winter beverage.

I loved the beginning of this book. It has a great opening scene, good characters with detailed back stories that are used to weave the story together, and great atmosphere. It lost a bit of it's charm for me in the middle where it slows down to the point of dragging. The story didn't seem to be moving forward. Toward the end you realize it was all an important part of unraveling the mystery in the book and I wished I had been more patient with the middle section. The writing is very good but it definitely has a fairy tale feel to it, so those who don't appreciate that quality in their books would do well to avoid this one. If you enjoy the feeling of having a good old fashioned story told to you, you might find this to be a wonderful read.
