This dark and gritty limited series is so full of detail and excellent performances it is almost too much to take in over one viewing. I'll definitely be watching it again!

This show is one of the rare exceptions to the 'book is always better' rule. In my estimation, they are of equal quality (and, yes, I read the book first). Jean-Marc Vallee is able to translate Camille's fractured psychology onto the screen in ways both quietly haunting and shockingly brutal. And the push and pull between Patricia Clarkson and Amy Adams' mother-daughter duo is well worth watching. They are perfectly cast, and the two actors know how to take Flynn's crafted pathos right to the edge of tawdriness while anchoring these two women in the muck and mire of real people with real grief and real sin. I always recommend the book (at least first because it's great!) but in this instance, one or the other (or both) serve this story well.

The psychology of the Amy Adams character is quite unexplained. The constant flashbacks of young girls we seem not to know and the multitude of characters that keep popping up but seem unimportant even at the end nearly made me give up on this series. I understand that the psychology of one of the characters cannot be explored because that would ruin the whole show, but it is not even given more than a short explanation by one of the characters.

This 8-part drama would have been twice as good if it had been half as long. Yes, we know that bad things happened to our heroine, we don't have to have 57 flashbacks. We know someone is preying on teenage girls ( to me the killer was obvious in the first couple of episodes ) who are disregarding their own safety. Again we do not need 63 scenes of teens partying or roller skating. We know our heroine has issues with sex. We don't need umpteen scenes of unfulfilling intimacy to get the idea. It is as though this series thinks we can't get the messages unless we are repeatedly beaten over the head. I think it insults the viewer's intelligence. Even Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson could not save this turkey. Disappointed. Kristi & Abby Tabby

A very strong and haunting show. They do a really great job building up the characters and sometimes it is not as focused on the mystery at hand. This works to the advantage of the show. Come for the mystery but be dragged down in the mud with the family drama.
