The usual tropes, the usual tripe. Unremarkable songs, a dull script, chemistry-free mannequins stumbling around (Gaga is the only somewhat high flyer). And relentlessly the cameras are too close to the subjects! Like watching through a mail slot in a door.

I thought Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga were excellent. But I wasn't prepared for the ending. I guess I wasn't familiar with the story. I also thought it went on a little too long. But it was beautifully shot and the music was fantastic (even though I'll have Shallows in my head for at least a month).

I was skeptical about this movie since it's a remake but Lady Gaga makes the movie a winner. She looks better naturally - without all of her performance makeup. Great new music too - good lyrics, not just all about heartbreak or sex.

Really very good. Lady Gaga can act! She did a great job. I got involved.

From the first moment, every other word began with F and after about 10 minutes I'd had enough.

This movie might have taken a sudden and amazing upturn in the last half hour, but I'm afraid we just didn't make it that far.

Overall I thought this was good. Lady Gaga gave a powerful and charismatic performance. Bradley Cooper was also very good. Having seen other versions of this story, I found it not very fresh or new and the plot itself was 100% predictable and very paint-by-numbers. So in spite of great performances I did not find the story very gripping.

Both Lady Gaga and Bradley are mesmerizing to watch. This should have won the Oscars.

It has been said that 'leaders are born, not made', and 'he was a born leader'. Ditto stars? Jack advises the deeply talented Ally to dig deep and express her uniqueness.
The traumatized often alcoholic Jack feels the pull of wanting Ally for himself and at the same time wanting her to blossom to her potential.
Blossoming to her potential here means rising to the top of the pop music world; that involves submitting to the direction of a savvy impresario, certain that Jack will be no help.
As the movie progresses it looks like there is increasingly little room for loving time together, a more exciting development for Ally than for Jack.
For me, I cried at the same time Jack first did, and several times later.
There is a notion that one doesn't eat what one likes, rather likes what one eats. I've been eating a certain kind of music, sometimes called the Great American Songbook for so long that much of what's playing here doesn't seem to make the whole project really worthwhile. The rendition of 'La Vie En Rose' is a knockout.
The size of the role might have been the factor that allowed LG to challenge herself with this. She had a number of former stars to study for the role.
Bradley, for one brief moment, recalled James Mason. According to wiki, he 'took a back-end deal in order to get the film made, resulting in a $39.9 million salary'.
When are we going to get another 'Singing in the Rain'?
