Terrible, terrible, and terrible. Did I mention this is a terrible movie. Schlock. Just take a look at the cover, (Yes you can judge this DVD by it's cover) and it's exactly what you get. God awful movie. I feel like spitting in a garbage can while typing these comments. Ugh......

Slow start but it does get better. FYI, her husband is gay and there are both gay sex scenes and oral sex scenes. I'm not a fan of Saoirse Ronan. She tends to underact or overact, not much of anything between. In this she was okay.

Based upon some of the reviews, I guess I liked this film more than most viewers. The basics of the story were 99% unknown prior to viewing, but the film seems to be fairly faithful to what I read in Wikipedia. I not so sure about the sexual orientations, etc. They may have been invented to maximize interest.

Why do people in "Hollywood" think they need to revise history to make a movie about this time in history? The real stories of the Tudors and the Stuart, the York's and the Lancaster's, etc etc are the greatest soap operas ever conceived in and of their own right. There is absolutely no need to fictionalize any of it. For instance, Elizabeth and Mary never , ever met. Elizabeth had always confessed that had she met Mary she would not have been able to sign the death warrant. Additionally, Mary's claim to the English throne is a complicated story in an of itself. She was the granddaughter of Henry viii's sister, Margaret who had married the king of Scotland. Her strong claim to the throne was based on whether Elizabeth was deemed to be a bastard as many did not recognize the marriage between Henry viii and Ann Boleyn. When Mary returned to Scotland after her husband, the king of France died, she did not stand a chance of a successful reign. She was surrounded by a bunch of thug and warring nobles, incredible religious strife between Catholics and Reformists, no loyal Scottish backing and the constant threat she presented to the English throne. She was doomed from the start. Whether or not she actively participated in a plot against Elizabeth has been the subject of many books. But rest assured that Elizabeth's 2 chief and very clever advisors, Cecil and Walsingham were master manipulators and politicians and one way or another would have succeeded in bringing Mary down regardless of her participation in any plot against Elizabeth. Hollywood, stick to the true historical facts and you will create a much more interesting and credible movie.

This could have been a great movie if the screenwriters cared about actual history; I don't think Mary and Elizabeth's story needed to be embellished to be fascinating. I thought it unnecessary to make Elizabeth the "bad guy" and Mary "good". Some of the inaccurate details drove me crazy, for example, Mary was raised in France, I don't believe she would have a Scots accent; if you can't even get that right, how can you trust anything in this movie?! But, if you just want to watch a movie set in Tudor times about dueling queens, this was might be a good FICTION movie for you.

A beautiful historical setting movie. Well acted. Anyone wishing to see how the English & Scottish monarchy ruled in the 1500's; back stabbing, jockeying for power, intrique, death politics and how family shanked family (political wise).

Liked this movie a lot and the acting was excellent. Love period pieces most of the time.

Pros: well-acted by the two leads and support players, gorgeous sets and era-appropriate costumes. Cons: told in a confusing fashion; even as someone who knows the basic story of Mary's life and the conflict with Elizabeth, I found it hard to follow. A lot of sex that doesn't necessarily support the plot, and the ending was glossed over and unsatisfactory. It is definitely Mary's story we are seeing, with Elizabeth as almost a background character. It sheds an interesting light on the story of how Mary's husband was mysteriously killed by a man whom she then promptly married. Overall I give it a C.

If this movie stayed true to fact is was good and except for all the sex (which could have been left out) it might be shown to kids in school.

Enjoyed this movie! The performances of Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robie were extremely well done. It was a long story condensed to 125 minutes, so highlights were only hit. I can understand why some watchers may think it was rushed. As with many historical events, this one associated with the royal families of the time has its tragedy, what we today consider unjust, as well as strange events that occurred in that time period.
Overall, an enjoyable film to watch, the costumes are superb, the acting and settings are very well done.
