"Five New Yorkers must come together in order to save their city from destruction in the first book of a stunning new series by Hugo award-winning and NYT bestselling author N. K. Jemisin. Every great city has a soul. Some are ancient as myths, and others are as new and destructive as children. New York? She's got six. When a young man crosses the bridge into New York City, something changes. He doesn't remember who he is, where he's from, or even his own name. But he can feel the pulse of the city, can see its history, can access its magic. And he's not the only one. All across the boroughs, strange things are happening. Something is threatening to destroy the city and her six newborn avatars unless they can come together and stop it once and for all"-- Provided by publisher.

In a story that feels oddly prescient of Corona virus time, New York City is under attack by a many-tentacled invader that spreads like a virus. Fighting for the home team are 5 not-so-super heroes, each of them the embodiment of one the boroughs. Can Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island join forces to protect their city?

This book was a very fun. I recently finished The Broken Earth trilogy for the first time and found Jemisin’s writing to be just delightful. I made a point of buying a copy of this book as a thank you for the joy of reading the others from the library. The tone of this book is much different. Rather than the glacial-geological weight and power of the Broken Earth sentences, this read more flippantly, beautifully – if for different reasons. The characterizations were a delight and as someone who was lucky to live in New York for a while, it touched me in a special way. This is a modern-day Lovecraftian story written by someone you can feel good rooting for.
