A very weak and unimaginative sequel.

I enjoyed SKing's early books, Shining among them. This worked well as a follow-up story. Some of the pacing seemed slow until I realized that this was part of the ambiance of the film. The young talent was that -- a talent and should go far in the industry.

I guess after reading the book, like with so many movies it couldn't tell the entire story and there was a lot missing. This movie also had to be a follow up to an American classic. I guess you could say it had a double whammy before it even was made.

It is a soft, slow pacing horror movie, a disperse suspense. Interesting connection with "The Shining" movie. Very diverse cast. Simple custom design and just fine for the time and kind of film.

I enjoyed this movie adaptation of the book, Dr. sleep which I also enjoyed. I felt it was close enough to the written word but just different enough to make it an interesting movie,

THE MASTER OF AMERICAN MEDIOCRITY DOES IT AGAIN....
(tells the same story with even LESS refurbishing...)
Stick with the original and you get less hip-sie vampire carny whosis nonsense... this is the "Vintage Vogue" of reboot film, throwing dollars into recreating the Overlook for the flashbacks rather than some filter and the prior footage tailored around close ups. McGregor still capable, the rest of the cast isn't too challenged by the "complexity of the characters"...
IF King was gonna go back and revisit his former work, like he's NEVER done that before, SHINING not the worst to go with, but does illustrate he's not the threat he once was.

Surprised at all the good reviews! I really disliked this film. The Shining did not need a sequel whatsoever, for starters. Despite some decent actors, I found this film trite, shallow, boring.

It was quite a gamble to make this follow-up to "The Shining", but I was pleasantly surprised.
Mike Flanagan had some Kubrick-size shoes to fill and I though he did a nice job capturing the mood of the 1980 classic. Ewan McGregor was superb as an adult Danny Torrance and the re-casting of Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and Scatman Crother's characters was surprisingly accurate. Overall, it was fun to take one last trip to the Overlook Hotel.

This movie can be watched as a standalone, but having a little knowledge of the story/movie "The Shining" will help a lot. This horror is a little bit more on the fantasy side than true horror.

Pretty sound adaptation of the book. It's hard to see Ewan McGregor pulling off such a heavy roll, but he does so even with a spark of whimsey (just like Stephen King likes it).
The book was gracefully compacted into movie format, with so many subplots and recurring themes, that if you hadn't read the book, your experience is worthwhile.
Best watched at 2am on a windy night.
