The Ables has a familiar set-up, A teen gets superpowers when they come of age and now gets to go to a high school where they can learn how to be a superhero! What sets The Ables apart is that its main character is blind, and is in the Special Ed class at his superhero high school. The students in his class all have super powers and most of them have the ability to use them, but their physical limitations have lead to them being treated as liabilities instead of assets by their peers. This extra wrinkle turns what would be a fairly average story into one that has some serious depth, with our main cast not only having to deal with the normal stresses of going to high school but an additional layer of either contempt or pity from others in their own superhuman community. Yet despite all the cards being stacked against them, our characters still manage to prove that it's not the body or the powers that makes a superhero extraordinary, its what they do with them. The Ables is a great debut from first-time author Jeremy Scott and I look forward to seeing how he is further able to expand the cast and world that he has created in the future.
