Jonny Valentine is a thinly disguised version of Justin Bieber, and Love Song is a sad, smart, crushing satire of our cultural obsession with celebrity and its real-world implications for child pop stars. Books for grownups with child protagonists are notoriously difficult to write, and even the hallowed Harper Lee has been criticized for Scout's inconsistent voice. But Wayne does a FANTASTIC job with the 11 year old Jonny Valentine -- he's both naive and world-wise, each to a heartbreaking degree. I listened to the audio version, brilliantly narrated by Kirby Heyborne, and, as the story arc began its final ascent, I started to panic that the story was going to stall and the book would tumble from the little pedestal of love I'd already built for it in my heart. But then everything ended PERFECTLY, so perfectly, there couldn't have been a more perfect ending, and my love was reaffirmed and restored.
